Article #1 Changes to the Lighting System

Author: Belgarion

** What's the problem? At the moment, the world has two light states: "light", and "dark". You can either see, or you can't. There are also a number of bugs, whereby light "accumulates", or "disappears", instead of being reduced or increased when appropriate (although the worst of these have been tracked down and fixed). This isn't particularly realistic -- okay, the aim of the game isn't to be a 100% accurate reproduction of the Real World(tm), but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't look for ways to improve realism if it can improve the game! ** So what's being done about it? The first changes have been completed: instead of getting a generic "It is dark." message when you can't see things, you'll now get a message that reflects just _how_ dark it is. For example, if the light is _almost_, but not _quite_, enough to see, you'll get a message similar to "You can dimly make out shadows around you." If it's really, really, *really* dark, you'll get a message similar to "It is so dark, any light seems to be swallowed." In addition, it's now possible for it to be too *bright* to see, in which case you'll get messages like "It's so bright, you can barely stand to keep your eyes open." The final change that has been implemented is to have a sliding scale of vision. What this means is that there is a hard range within which you can see. If the light is outside that range, you'll be unable to see -- period. End of story. No argument. However, within that range, there is also a sliding range. If the light is below that sliding range, the sliding range will move down -- your pupils will dilate, making it easier to see in the dark. If the light is above the sliding range, your pupils will contract, making it harder to see in the dark, but easier to cope with the glaring sun (or torches, or lanterns, or whatever.) Currently, all the rooms in the world implement the old "on/off" lighting state. As a result, just about everybody you see will have extremely dilated pupils. Don't sweat it -- the next set of changes will deal with that problem. ** Okay -- that's what has been done. But what's next? The next step is to fix up the world rooms so that they have more realistic lighting values. During the day time, for example, they'll be flooded with light. At night, they may have a bit of light (so you can see by the stars), or they may have none at all (cloudy night, no moon, etc.) Once that's done, changes will be made to races. For examples, mephits are demons of fire. They're used to sitting around bright light sources. As a result, they'll be able to deal with *really* bright rooms quite happily, whilst humans and other creatures will have trouble adapting. Archons, on the other hand, are creatures of darkness -- so they can see well in the dark, but can't handle bright lights easily. There will be a "sweet spot" somewhere in the light scale where all the races of the world can see. However, it's unlikely that there will be a sweet spot where all races can see _comfortably_.. eg, a camp fire would be dim for a mephit, but bright for an archon. ** But hang on -- how will I be able to cope if it's too bright/dark? Well, there are torches to bring the lighting up to snuff if it's too dark. Similarly, there will eventually be "anti-torches" that *absorb* light, making a room darker. In addition, things like sunglasses and night vision goggles (although with names that are more suitable for a fantasy setting) will make an appearance; these will have an effect only for somebody wearing them. ** And what effect will this have on game play? Initially, none. Eventually, though -- and this will be after all the other changes above have settled in -- we'll be implementing a change that makes it harder to see "smaller" objects in the dark. Ever tried to find a five cent piece on a shadowed part of a carpet with only the moon shining in through the window? That sort of thing. So if it's too dark (or too bright) for you, you could overlook things. If you can't see _at all_, you'll only be able to find the biggest, most obvious objects (like bulletin boards). Thieves will have greater success against other players if their target is unable to see clearly. Combat will be harder if you can't see. Stealthy movement will be easier. And so on. All in all, it'll make things like torches much more important.. and add an extra dimension to the game ("Why did the lights just go out? Hey! Where's my wallet?!") ** Hey! How about adding... If you have ideas, feel free to post them to the idea board. So far, most of the ideas we've seen from players have already been canvassed, and are planned for the future, but all feedback is useful. ** Sounds great! When's it all happening? When I get the time to implement and test stuff. I was going to throw everything in at once, but it proved too difficult to write and test, so now, it's a gradual process. "Sometime this year" is the closest thing to a plan that I have -- I'm trying to get a life away from computers, which makes it hard to work on this stuff regularly. :) Cheers, Bel.

Article #2 The call of gaia

Author: Narn

I used to be normal person. I would eat, sleep, drink, do all the normal things, but then, I felt the call. I first felt it while I was a bit south of sanom, near morgars tower. It called to me, compelling me to go towards it, I did. It led me to the ocean, now at first, this would have scared me, but I knew that as long as I was following the calling, nothing could hurt me. I saw towards the calling, constantly swimming. Then, I saw an island loom ahead, I swam towards the island, knowing that the calling was leading me there. As I got onto the island, it looked like a picture of heaven, nature, green and verdant, unspoiled by the hands of civilization. I saw a path on the ground, and I followed it. It lead to a calm and quiet grove. There, I saw some druids, and realized that I had been lead to the secret location of the druid's grove. I asked them if I could join their secret sect, and they admitted me. Afterwards, I realized that call had been that of gaia, summoning me to join her and the druids.

Article #3 The Path of Chalana Arroy

Author: Iana

Being relatively young and naive, I had a curious nature about me, always keen to learn of what was out past the trees of our valley home. I led a very sheltered life and my father kept me busy tending to the farm. But deep down i always felt a yearning to one day venture out past the trees and plow headlong into the forest and not look back. It was my 18th birthday and my father sat me down and handed me this gift wrapped up in cloth. It was then he started telling me things I never knew and didn't want to believe! He said I was adopted, he found me crying in the middle of the forest near their home, with a note and this symbol I now carry. The note explained that I was a very distant decendant of the lineage of the true worshippers of Chalana Arroy, the secret sect of Healers. This symbol was the key to my lineage and stated my purpose when I reached my name day. It was all overwhelming and for weeks I refused to believe it, but then my father turned to me and spoke things that rang true in my heart. I did feel a desire to leave all my life, and I also felt a great sorrow every morning when i woke, I didn't know what the sorrow was but I felt I must stop or ease it somehow. After two weeks, I picked up the symbol, it was a Platinum Ankh with inscriptions I couldn't read but touching the cool metal I felt a stirring deep down inside me, suddenly visions filled my head, so quickly I felt vertigo and almost fell over. Reeling from what had happened i must have sat there for hours trying to fathom their meaning and what had just happened. I decided the only way to find out was to travel to where these Healers were known to gather. Using the map on the note and gathering some possessions, I faired my father well, I refused to think of him otherwise, he always had sheltered me and taken care of me and taught me about the world. I took a deep breathe and walked the path I know I would walk one day. As I past into the forest and my home disappeared I felt an urging. I walked for many a day and night. I wasn't even sure if i was heading in the right direction, but i saw many things i had never seen before, rolling hills, beautiful lakes, wild beasts, some friendly, some scary. One particular night, I was making camp with the symbol began to hum and start to glow, I grabbed it and felt a rush of power shoot up my arm, I was suddenly aware of danger, the hairs tinged on the back of my neck, holding the symbol up and slowly circling around, there it was... snarling at me, a horrible stench and sharp teeth and claws. I have never seen anything like it, I was terrified, hands clutched to the symbol I held it up and suddenly I spoke in a tongue I have never learnt, and a bright light flashed from the symbol and struck the beast, there was a tremendous shockwave and booming in my ears, the light got brighter and brighter and i must have blacked out. Feeling weak, i slowly opened my eyes and found I was in a comfortable bed of straws, in unfamiliar surroundings, and a faint murmur of chantings in the distance and the smell of the forest and birds singing. I tried to get up and felt great pain, suddenly a hand was slowly pushing me down. It was a man cloaked in grey garb and his eyes were an intense blue, his face was cracked and old, but the eyes, the eyes were so vibrant it was hard to discern his age. He spoke in a quiet but confident tone, and explained to me how I came to be here, the thing I did with the symbol caused shockwaves to ripple out for miles around and alerted them that some powerful forces were at work, they headed to the source of the disturbance, and found me blackened and burnt clutching an ancient Symbol of Chalana Arroy belonging to a once Grand Healer Peterson! They realised I must be one his offspring and immediately took me to shelter, the forces I had unleashed had left me weak, apparently I unwittingly banished a powerful demon. They then asked if I would like to be adopted into their guild of healers, it felt right and so I began my training, after weaks of patience and study, they felt I was ready to search out the injured and heal them. I headed into a nearby city to offer my services, at first I was avoided, but I stumbled across a man who was beaten within an inch of his life in a side alley, placing my hands on his wounds I closed my eyes and opened my mind to the healing powers of chalana arroy, speaking prayers quietly, I felt my life forces being drawn into the man. He gasped, and with eyes wide opened thanked me and explained he was attacked and mugged for his belongings by a thief. When i woke in the morning, i noticed something i had never felt before in my life, the sorrow was gone! I then knew it had to do with my destiny to follow the path of Chalana Arroy! -Anubis (edited by: Iana)

Article #4 Garuda update

Author: Belgarion

A lot of people have been asking about Garuda: what it's all about, when will the guild re-open, etc., etc., etc. In the (probably vain and naive) attempt to reduce the number of incessant questions, I've decided to submit this article to the paper for all to read (and enjoy? :) ) * How it all began. Garuda was originally written by the (now retired) wizard Mnemoth. It was fairly popular, so far as I know (it was before my time as a player), with, at the time it was removed, six people trying to get in, and 27 actual members. Unfortunately, there were a number of problems with it: the worst was an intermittent infinite loop which would crash the MUD. With Mnemoth retired around the end of 1993 (his last login was late March 1994), it would have been necessary to get another wizard to fix the problem. Because of the way Mnemoth wrote it, however, this proved difficult to do: probably the best way to describe it is "like spaghetti - everything intricately intertwined." I have taken on the task of trying to get the guild working. When I initially started, I copied the code, printed it out, and started pouring over it. After about two or three weeks of getting more and more frustrated, the decision was that it would be easier to write the guild from scratch - again - rather than fix any problems in the old code. * What the guild does for you. When you manage to join, you receive a pet monster (specifically: a roc.) This roc, initially, is little better than the pet pixie in Xarus: it can follow you around, carry stuff, and that's about it. After enough time, it "matures" enough to be able to carry you aloft. This is the primary purpose of Garuda: flight. It's also the reason why the guild is so difficult: the MUD has not been designed in a manner that takes the possibility of flight into account, so some careful coding (and illusion) is needed to simulate flight. At later levels, it is possible to turn the messages you receive from the roc on or off at will; remember places (with perches) for future reference; and sic your roc onto other monsters. If, however, the roc should die too much, it will not be able to regenerate, and you will be thrown out of the guild. :) As you grow older, and reach higher levels, the roc becomes bigger and stronger, up to a certain upper limit. (which, not coincidentally, is higher for the Guild Leader than ordinary members. :) ) * Duties and priveledges of the Guild Leader. Are essentially the same as for other guild leaders: starting guild alliances, setting prices for guild-related equipment, etc., etc. Because of the onerous :) nature of these duties, the Guild Leader gets two perks: a free home, and a certain portion of the profit from the sold equipment. [the Guild Maintainer gets the rest of the profit...hey, I've got to make a buck SOMEWHERE! :) :) :) ] In addition, the guild leader gets a somewhat more powerful roc than other members. * State of the coding. "There are three stages in any project: the beginning, the middle, and 'nearly finished'." :) At the moment, Garuda is hovering between the "middle" and "nearly finished" stages - the basics work, but there are still some problems with (for example) flight and some of the abilities (such as getting your roc to examine other people.) Once the more significant problems are fixed, the guild will be opened for player testing. (At that time, a post will be made to the player board, and a submission made to the newspaper, about who can and cannot join the guild, and the gods that are compatible with the guild - currently Vulcan, Psyche, and Chalana Arroy.) Please, do not ask me questions about "Can I become a player tester?" - they will be dealt with when I open the guild for testing, NOT BEFORE. Asking is an almost guaranteed method of being rejected! :) - Belgarion.

Article #5 Druids

Author: Lena

Druids ====== At the moment there is work being done on a new guild. The guild of druids is being constructed by our faithful wizard Qarath. At the present time there are only a couple of test characters for this guild and as far as I know Qarath is not looking for any more so dont bug her about it. Anyway, the main gist of druid is that they are nature freaks. They spend their days browsing at all the wonderful and dangerous plants which are found in our world. Also they like to spend time talking with the animals who in turn may help defend a druid in battle. From what information I have been able to extract the goddess of the druids does not approve of drinking, so alcohol is a no no for these guy and gals . Also the goddess of the druids does not like its followers to take advantage of all the items which the world has to offer so restrictions have been placed on the quantity of items which a member can take from the enivronment at one time. At present compatibility with the other guilds around are still being considered, but the main issue is getting the code working. So with other duties also taking up alot of her time long delays will be expected. Stay tuned for more updates as they become known ..... The Ed.

Article #6 The joy of illusions

Author: Flash

May I take this opportunity to recommend to all newbies the benefits of joining the illustrious guild of Ravnos. Not only is it free to join until you have completed a considerable number of quests, it is straightforward and risk-free to practise the art of simple illusions such as knives and torches. These items are ideally suited to the environment of the dungeon beneath the palace. My advice is to head down there and practise throwing illusory knives at rats, bats, orcs and goblins. Knife-throwing is a much under-used skill in Shattered World and the advantage of illusory knives is that they vanish into nothing before they can be thrown back at you. Moreover, once your knife-throwing skill becomes renowned, you may be able to earn a living as a performed in the Chaotic Circus! While you're in the dungeon, you might want to take the opportunity to collect a few bat corpses and sell them in your local butchers shop. Bat skewers are delicious and there aren't too many bat colonies elsewhere in the realm. Orcs and goblins can also be sold, but their meat is somewhat rancid so if you're a gourmet, stick to bats! Oh, and one more tip: don't practise throwing knives on the streets of Sanom City. Not only is this anti-social, it could also get you into serious trouble. Those guards really zip around the streets and, until you become very accurate, can inadvertently get caught in the crossfire. If this happens, I have one more piece of advice for newbie readers. You can always hide out from the law or infuriated more powerful players (who cannot enter beyond a certain age) inside the palace dungeon. Happy hunting! Flash.

Article #7 The Will of Javen

Author: Venabili

Javen is strong. I am a follower of Javen. I am, therefore strong. The ones above me are stronger. Guild Leader Perception is strongest. He holds the mandate, the mandate of our Lord Javen. Our Lord speaks directly to, directly through him, and we listen attentively. All I have learned is from Lord Javen and his followers, and I plan to use my knowledge wisely. I am still but a young human, venturing out on the walks of Sanom City and testing my skill, but soon I will rise. I will draw power from those around me, and I will rise. I have time to do so. I am but a mere manipulator, and can, supposedly, force my will upon others. I chose these ways when I learned my natural inclincation to persuasion and my natural charisma. I was able to sway the people around me, but I was unsure to what degree until I became learned in the supposed "Dark Arts" of my Lord, Javen. I walked in, and greeted the Soulstealer that was there, after asking me a few questions, he knew that I was certainly beyond eligibility, and gave me the chance of a lifetime, which I eagerly took. Ever since then, I have slowly been working my way up the lower echelons of the infrastructure of my Lord's domain, and soon I will rise - I tell you, soon I will rise! Venabili

Article #8 berserker

Author: Ormuzd

The berserkers guild has mysteriously dissappeared. Rumor has it that the mages of the city were set upon by a hord of berserkers, killing many before Xarus intervened. Such was the anger of Xarus that not only did he destroyed the hord, he totally anniliated the temple of Zarquon. Many have spoken of the mighty dragor south east of the city, which is believed to be the pet of Zarquon. On a clear still night, frenzy rituals may be hear from the caves south of dragor. One berserker, who escaped Xarus's fury has claimed that now Zarquon has bless its followers with new powers and swore revenge.

Article #10 Healers + Quests

Author: Salvor

I have learned that it is very difficult for healers to do any quests if they are only in Chalana Arroy. This means that they do not have the helping hands of elementals or rocs, but that they have a stronger connection to their goddess. Most quests require players to commit great deals of violence which are practically unspoken of in the guild of the healers. This leads me to believe that it would be pretty interesting if there were a number of non-violence quests that could be created exclusively for the healers guild, not included in the main list of quests. Before this can be implemented, though (if it ever does which is very unlikely), I suggest that all healers should do all quests that they possibly can before doing the Valley of the Wind and later on joining the guild. If I had done this myself the quests that I would have to do now with great difficult would already be completed when i was able to attack normally. Although this major setback may seem bad, the idea of healing and later on powerhealing balance out its effect. -Gladia

Article #12 The Big Trio

Author: Hampton

Well, most people who have been playing for a while remember the big trio of the last alliances, which was xarus-ravnos-gaia. There are many reasons why those were very good guilds, but that is of no importance in this article. I will explain why the current big trio (which in my opinion is arioch- psyce-zarquon) is so successful for offensive power The sirens offer good all around skills and at high levels do massive head damage. Zarquon, although requiring quite a bit of sp, has pure offensive power with maim and berserking (boosts your strength). While Arioch gives a way to fight enemies at a distance. Some might replace psyche with keting and ravnos, but those are not the guilds that a true fighter would choose. -Hampton

Article #13 Master of Reality

Author: Syrix

Deep within the dark woods a portal from another dimension opened, just long enough for a tall humanoid to step through. The man walked off quickly, heading towards the heart of the forest. Standing at the foot of the large tree-city of Merenth, the man spoke for the first time in this dimension, "So this is the city of Merenth, my quest is drawing near to the end." The man climbed up, until he found his destination: a guild hall, devoted to Ravnos, the One Master of Reality. "So this is where my tutor wanted me to go. Here I will continue my training, and become skilled in the arts of Ravnos." I am Syrix, Master of Reality, devotee of Ravnos.

Article #14 Ke'ting & Me!

Author: Drexer

I walk through the sewers, passing multitudes of rats on either side. I run past the rats, and a total of 3 thieves! I find my way safely to the altar of the god Ke'ting, quick of hands and wit. I choose to join not because I am evil or unjust, but because I wish to try the powers that this merciful god will bestow upon me. I bring a chainmail coif, yet I am rejected by this god. Although he is greedy, he give me a chance to redeem myself. I run out and find a chainmail shirt, praying to the holy god Ke'ting for him to listen to my prayer. As I pray I realize that he has indeed accepted my offer, but there is another problem, I am too uncoordinated! I try to find some way to boost my dexterity, some ring, amulet, or something, but to no avail. Then a great knight now my complete opposite, gives me the answer, the cult spell "coordination". I quickly enchant myself and retry the initiation process. This time I am accepted, and I have tricked the god of deceit himself! The novice locksmith, Drexer

Article #15 Join Arioch!!

Author: Moridin

Hello People of Sanom City... 3>[HP=209/209 SP=39/145] 3>[HP=209/209 SP=39/145]Arioch is at this moment, the weakest guild in respect to members, with just 16 active members. So I guess you could call this a bit of a membership drive :) We need members desperately! So what I thought I would do as the new Guild Leader of Arioch, is to point out some of the benefits in joining Arioch. When you become a demon summoner, you have the ability to summon demons to help you. Relatively easy once you start, summon up an imp and send him to go kill a pesky orc etc... However what people dont reliase, is that every time you summon a demon you are having to try and control it, as well as fight it. This in turns helps you to increase your offence and defence skills. If you have racial these also can be practiced by stoning the demon so he understands where your coming from or fanging him etc. The other thing about Arioch is that it costs you nothing in your sp. None of this maiming when attacking and then having to drain your cult dry...You can just send your controlled demon on his way to do your fighting for you, which means that you dont get hurt(well at least not with the smaller demons) One last thing, it took me about 3 days (RL) of summoning to get up to lvl 11. So its not hard to become a strong member of this guild. Thankyou for listening people of Sanom, and if you have questions then please do not hesitate to ask me :) Moridin - Guild Leader of Arioch

Article #16 Why?

Author: Zane

This may not be something you want to hear, but I highly advise any young person who wants to learn about the world to head for the sewers and pledge your loyalty to the guild of thieves. Why would I say something like that? Simply because it is true. If the thought of a devotee of the dark arts of thievery and illusions voicing what he feels is the truth bothers you, or if you simply can not comprehend such a notion, then do yourself a favor and read no further. However, if you're one of those that wants to learn, or enjoys reading a well-written account of the thoughts and opinions of a devotee of the dark arts of thievery and illusions, then by all means. Back to what I was saying earlier ... yes, one can truly learn about oneself under the tutelage of Ke'Ting. When you were young, you didn't have to worry for much, because your parents could protect you. If you made favorable choices in your life, everyone would like you, and you again wouldn't have to worry. I ask you, what fun is that? Living in a world where everything is at peace, and living one of those "tranquil, everday lives"? Sounds like bird droppings if you ask me. However, I hold nothing against those who live those kind of lives. As long as they're happy, why put a lockpick into the equation? However, being a thief takes away all that. Suddenly, you're the enemy. Everyone who liked you before thinks you're pond scum now (no offense or pun intended to the triton readers). City guards who smiled at you before are now waiting for you to foul up so they can haul you in and feel proud. Those who would have protected you before are now fighting over who gets to take a bounty out on your head. You're pretty much on your own, fighting agaist all the odds. The thieving business, although laid back on the outside, is actually a pretty serious thing. It takes great skill to be able to lift something from someone's pockets without them knowing. Practicing that skill takes great patience, too. I like to compare it to an art form, which I feel it really is. Whether you join becuase you think the life of a cutpurse is cool, or because you wish to master the arts (like me), the thieving life should have something good for you. The real test is staying away from the bads, which is not always easy to do. Case in point: not too terribly long ago, I was traveling with Lawrence, one of Vulcan's knights, who happens to be a good friend. It was not for protection, as both myself and Lawrence are capable combatants, but rather for the company. Lawrence wanted to go to Vulcan's hall in order to train, and suggested I come along and spar with him a while and see how he's coming along (it's no big secret that it was I who trained Lawrence in combat when he was younger). I agreed and we headed off. On our way there, some bozo decided to start yelling "Thief!" and throwing rocks at us ... rather, at me. Even so, the idiot nearly smashed Lawrence's face with a thrown rock, and would have had I not pushed him out of the way. It took all my self-control to resist the impulse to throw my dagger at him, and since he was still up there, laughing his head off, I could have easily killed him. Lawrence and I ended up arriving, and we did spar, but I never forgot that. "Why?" is irrelevant to some people. The justification in their minds is because you're a thief, they should make you feel inferior. Such a distrust could bring about a crime spree from many disgruntled followers of Ke'Ting, of which I wouldn't take part, but would likely get put in the stocks, or burned at the stake anyway. Hope you can run fast.

Article #17 Roc Training

Author: Dredge

Training my new friend has been a tough experience for me. Imom is incredibly stubborn, and it takes a day or more for me to teach him anything. Many a citizen has laughed at me in the fields outside the city, as I run up and down, flapping my arms, urging Imom into the air as he runs alongside me. Alas Imom just looks at me with his big eyes as if thinking 'what are you doing silly Arachean?' I've tried taking him into the mountains and leaving him on a high ledge, then calling him. Imom just digs his claws in and climbs down. Rewards dont work, He's too clever and knows I will give them to him eventually. Maybe Im too soft hearted. Maybe I should use the stick instead of the carrot. But I fear Imom knows I would never punish him too harshly. So what am I to do? Well unless he learns to fly soon....I shall be the only Roc Rider who will never feel the air rushing around me. But even if that happens, I will never give up on Imom, He is my friend. If anyone has any tips for training Rocs, please contact me. I'll be the one on the back of the Roc that never flies.

Article #18 A Victory for the Children of Light

Author: Lothair

To all the human citizenry in Sanom, it is with a proud heart and great pleasure that I announce the return of one who has strayed from the glorious path. Formerly, Patrick left the blessed guild of Vulcan to try his hand at trickery and deception, theft and outright bloody violence to join the Ravnos/Ke'Ting/Zarquon triumvirate. But after some counselling with the Children of Light, Brother Patrick has once again found his way towards the light and has re-joined Vulcan. Not only has he once again become the most noble of knights, he has in fact, ascended to the most noble of positions. That of mithril knight. As founder of the Children of Light, I wish good sir knight, Patrick, a most prosperous reign. May he rule with wisdom and kindness and may this see an era where we humans once again rise up and take our rightful place as the leaders of this great city of ours. In our neverneding quest to help those who have found themselves lured away from the righteous path, the Children of Light extend helping hands to those in need. Any humans who feel lost, are in desperate need or just need to talk, myself and the other brothers and sisters of the order would welcome you with open arms. Happy are we who walk the true path and know our way. Woe to those who Usurp our rightful place in this world. Many are we in number who have been sorely mistreated by the half-breeds And ne'er do wells who seem to have overrun this city. Now let us reclaim what is rightfully ours!

Article #19 Apprentice Druid

Author: Ledge

I have learned many things along the druid path. When I was a young druid I learned to sing and dance. Happiness I had found in being a young druid. I learned that as a druid I was able to be more as one with the plants and animals. I found that I could find food among the vines in the forest and fields. As I gre to a young man and adventure called. I found that in fighting I could summon some of the animals that I had grown to love and play with in the forest. They were happy to lend a hand in my greatest time of need. Later I found that as a druid I truly had great power over the plants and animals. It was not just an increased sense of awareness, but great power. As I became stronger and grew to be a man. I found that larger beast that I had never known, but had been watching me would now come to my aid in battle. Even the mighty bear would now bow his head to me. I soon became a great tracker and the hunt was on. My adventures took me far and I traveled long distances in search of great adventure. One day when the sun was beating down on me and the road I traveled had grown long. I felt that if I did not find water soon I would perish. After three days of no water I had finally thought that I had seen my last days. I stopped and fell to my knees praying to Gaia. With all hope lost. I reached deep in side and throught the aid of gaia was able to bring forth the rain. I had found that Gaia had granted me the ability with godly aid to change nature. With control of nature comes the need to be humble. Such power can be easily abused. Nature is a powerful thing and with my greatest fight yet to come. I found that one night while I was asleep. I had a dream about a great dragon. In this dream I was able to use nature to come to my aid. During the battle I struck the dragon not once but twice with a powerful bolt of lighting. It was if Gaia was now listening to my very desires. Now that I am an old man. Gaia has permitted me to become an apprentice. An apprentice to a great summoning of nature and animals mixed together. Mixed in such a way to form great beastly elementals. The new creaters while great are a mean lot and hard to control. They have not excepted me yet. But with focus, study, and practice I know that eq I will soon be able to control the beastly lot. There great powers are still a mistery to me. The day will come when all creatures will feel my power of elemental control. That day will come and on the day all dragons should sleep lightly. Because I will slay them all...soon. May Gaia bestow great powers on you all.

Article #20 From the dust... (to all of You devoted to destroy)

Author: Sheila

LECTORI SALUTEM Never was there anything with greater capability of both creation and disurction than the mind of a well developed creature. But, alas, what we use our brains for, is more the matter of upbringing, attitude and empathy. Many have sought the true power of the minds, but few, if any, succeeded. But even with a little part of what we could truely have... we are the ones donated with this heavenly gift... We should consider what to use it for. Just count all the minutes you spent distroying something. Ready? So now, let's imagine together how this realm would look like, if every single one of its inhabitants would have spent only half of this time creating something... Amazing isn't it? And I don't only mean actually building something (for this is a restricted area in the realms), but being worthy to have this God Granted Gift, what we call mind... using it for mutual benefit, and not abusing it. I hope, and know, that there are souls in the realms, who will think about this advice, and consider making it their personal guide lines, so we all can benefit of it... Post Scriptum: I know, there are many of You, reading this article protesting... "We did create, we did not distroy" ... and You are probably right, for I have met many of You, so to say 'Good souls', but before protesting read the title again and calm down. 'Openeyes'

Article #21 Ethical Points Most Of Us Never Think About

Author: Nionalas

Have Thee ever thought about being another being (I know followers of Javen did, but this is another matter)... In fact being able to sense their feelings... Some of Thee have, some of Thee might never will. But even amongst those who thought about that, do Thee think there are more than a handful, who could really imagine it?? I doubt it. Would You all (and look deep into Thy souls at this point), would YOU kill any of these harmless little rats? But this is only an example. Think about cats and dogs, think about bears or even trolls o goblins... Yes I said goblins. Do Thee think WE are different, superior just because we (I mean most of us, but not all) are a little more developed in our minds??? Different we are, Yes! But don't we all differ, even amongst more educated beings there are several races... EVEN in your own race, You can not find one exactly like You! We are in some manner superior also... But, this is not a reason to distroy them! Think about it: How do You take it if a belowed one leaves to eternal peace? Have You ever thought about it, while in a middle of a fight with a goblin, that this 'thing' probably has a family. Or if not, he has a few other goblins (which we would call friends) to go back to. Think about having to go to their children, and having to tell them, that "I had to kill your father, 'cause I eeded money"! Think about this next time in a fight and ask to Thyselves... IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?

Article #22 A Fight Against Evil

Author: Cruentus

I entered this world, wondering what I should do. As I stepped out of the initiation room, I looked at my hands, and saw the pasty, soft flesh that covered them. It seemed as if my wish to be a human had come true, and I was going to see what I could do with what I had. As I wandered the city aimlessly, I encountered the Sanom City Bard. I sat as he told me stories about day-to-day life in the city, but was suprised when he told me that the only thing humans were good for, was to become Knights. So after some inquiring and begging, I got a couple of more experienced players to lead me the way to the guild hall, but found out that I would need to complete a simple task before I gained the privilege. I completed the task quickly and easily, and took a gulp from the chalice. This was when I began to halucinate. I saw smiths running 'round me, hammering metal plates to my body, giving me strength, giving me protection. When I blinked my eyes, the smiths were gone, and I was proud of my new status. I walked back to Sanom, wanting to try out my new abilities, but found that I was missing the weapon that was vital to a good knight, the sword. So, I searched long and hard for this weapon, but was not able to find one, so I conceded to asking a passer-by that seemed nice enough. This slugish creature, Arkayn I think his name was, graciously bestowed this longsword upon me, and I been gracious ever since. I learned from my Knightly brothers that the objective of the knights were to clear the vermin of the city, the thieves. Although I didn't agree with them that these ordinary people should be killed, it was a sort of initiation into the circle of knights, and I wasn't going to seem like a boy in front of these men. So I scoured the city, and ended up in the sewers, as I looked into the adjacent room, I spied a thief, and jumped into battle. I used my sword to try and relieve him of his head, but that damn thief kept dodging my attack, and striking back too. I looked at my wounds, and decided to run out of the room, ready to quit. Just as I was about to run out of the sewers, a friendly healer let herself in. She bandaged up my wounds, and blessed me with a hymn of healing. I went back into the room, killed that thief, and went back to the fountain, bragging to my new friends that I was, indeed, a man at last.

Article #23 Me and My Roc - A story about Man and Roc

Author: Wikle

Sometime ago, in the not to distant future I ventured into the city of Sanom, and the land of shattered realms. I was but a broke lad with little in the way of skill or training and existed on the charity of others, free food and the pitance I got for killing rodents. Wanting to better myself I joined a guild, that of Xarus the mighty Magician, and began mys tudies there. I progresed quite far, I paid thousands of pieces of gold to learn new skills, and with these I set out to explore these lands. I became a Knight and learnt much, but I was unhappy with their rigid hierachy. Then Xarus wantd 20,000 coins, just so I could continue to study. A fortune to me! I was forced to leave and find a more economical alternative. My search began and I was offered a position as a druid. With my mystical training and my love for nature it was a fine choice. Accept I cannot train as I can't reach the island. Alas I was nt born of the ocean. One day I found myself at a roc hatchery and was captivated by these majestic and beautiful creatures as they soared, dipped and dived. I spent many weeks watching these creatures. Then finally one day a roc hatched and came to me. My heart filled with joy, I good literally SEE his thoughts, I felt his emotions, I had a pet like no other. His name is Ibevel. Unfortunately what I didn't realize that he was not quite developed, I mounted him and went for a ride, he promptly drowned. My heart filled with grieve, my eyes with tears, and my cheeks were red from the embarassment! He was restored to good health, and we practised some more. I feel no greater joy than when I am upon my roc. At present he can't quite fly, yet he makes many valiant attempts. His jovial nature, loving care, his unquestioning loyalty, this is why together me and Ibevel will be bound together to serve our Gods. And never let any druid forget, that a Roc is one of natures miracles too.

Article #24 To Fight.

Author: Nodren

They are fools that think that wealth or women or strong drink or even drugs can buy the most in effort out of the soul of a man. These things offer pale pleasures compared to that which is greatest of them all, that task which demands from him more than his utmost strength, that absorbs him, bone and sinew and brain and hope and fear and dreams -- and still calls for more. They are fools that think otherwise. No great effort was ever bought. No painting, no music, no poem, no cathedral in stone, no church, no state was ever raised into being for payment of any kind. No parthenon, no Thermopylae was ever built or fought for pay or glory; no Bukhara sacked, or China ground beneath Mongol heel, for loot or power alone. The payment for doing these things was itself the doing of them. To wield onself -- to use oneself as a tool in one's own hand -- and so to make or break that which no one else can build or ruin -- THAT is the greatest pleasure known to man! To one who has felt the chisel in his hand and set free the angel prisoned in the marble block, or to one who has felt sword in hand and set homeless the soul that a moment before lived in the body of his mortal enemy -- to those both come alike the taste of that rare food spread only for demons or for gods."

Article #26 The Capture of the Soul

Author: Laurial

Perhaps you've heard the guards speak of Johanna acting oddly and not seeming herself; or peraps you've heard them speak of the mysterious Soulstealers and their terrifying powers. But could this be true? Well, yes it is, actually. The Soulstealer, through the power of Javen, is granted the ability to possess creatures and non-player controlled characters. At higher levels, even a dragon may be possessed. Also, a soulstealer has the ability to hypnotise creatures and characters alike, thus giving them the compulsion to do as the Soulstealer wishes. At the highest levels, Soulstealers can even eat a player's soul. These truly are fearsome opponents. But these powers are open to player's request, if that is they'd like to join the ranks of Javen's guild. Look well, for the means of joining is hidden for only those of intellect to find. by Laurial.[D[D[D[D[D[C[C[C[C[CComrade Laurial.**

Article #27 The path of Chalana Arroy

Author: Anubis

It was a man cloaked in grey garb and his eyes were an intense blue, his face was cracked and old, but the eyes, the eyes were so vibrant it was hard to discern his age. follow hellwig stone hellwig cast freeze spoke in a quiet but confident tone, and explain to me how I came to be here, they thing i did with the symbol caused shockwaves to ripple out for miles around and alerted them that some powerful forces were at work, they headed to the source of the disturbance, and found me blackened and burnt clutching an ancient Symbol of Chalana Arroy belonging to a once Grand Healer Peterson!

Article #28 The Demons of Arioch

Author: Qella

There are many myths about the Demons of Arioch, some of which are true, and some of which are not. Most of what is told is a myth, told by drunken old men who wish to seem wise, or foolish mothers simply trying to scare their children into obediance. No, these myths are just that, myths. The first of these myths is that the Demon is that the Demons live in the realm, who are out to get all. A Demon inhabits an alternate dimension, known as the nether regions, this is where they live, breed, hunt and kill. It is the summoner that tears the hole into this region, allowing the demon to step through. The second myth is that these Demons are the creations of the God Arioch. That he created this region, and the Demons that inhabit it. This is true to an extent, the Demons of Arioch are indeed the servants of the God, but where they spawned from is unknown, and any who claim to know speak lies. The third myth is that Demons take many forms. This is entirely true, for the Demon takes many forms, from the lowly imp demon to the unbelieveably powerful Moloch Demon. The Demons come in three major sects, Man Demons, Elf Demons and Demons of Might. Man Demons are the most common demon, the most powerful being the Greater Fire Demon. This Demon is deadly, commonly eleven feet tall, and scales made of pure fire. They can put the heat on almost any creature, and allow the summoner a good chance of defeating any adversay. Elf Demons are less common, also coming in a range of sizes, the smallest being the Deadhel, the largest being the Grand Elf Demon, or Celebdel. The Celebdel is the meanest of these Demons, and will crush almost anything in it's path. Even a Greater Fire Demon must be wary of these. These Grand Elf Demons are almost impossible for the summoner to control, but this is not the worst of their worries. To summon the demon, one must go swimming in the ocean, and slay a whale. Only then, will the arcane materials be aquired to prepare for a summoning of one such beast. But such is its fury, that the swim is almost always worth it. Demons of Might are the most rare and deadly of Arioch's servants. These consist of three types, the mos deadly being the Raukamar and Moloch, each powerful enough to slay enything in the entire realm. A single Raukamar slayed the Avatar of Chanail in less than eight mighty blows, whilst the Avatar managed to land one insignificant hit. Whole Court's of Dragons have been slain by a lone Moloch on a rampage, none can withstand their might! Fear the Demon, but Fear the Servants of Arioch above all. It is as bad as you think, and they are out to get you.

Article #36 Chalana Arroy Attacks

Author: Ugnia

In shocking news, earlier this week, Chalana Arroy, the "God of Healing" was seen in the common market, shooting down random passers bye, in an act that would be more in keeping with Zarquon, the berserker god. Guild Leaders Ugnia and Dyskilian, who, having taunted the Town Fool, Tigo (who also happens to be the Healers' Guild Leader) were shocked when the lightning came down from the sky, striking both of them down. Chalana then allegedly took control of the Sanom City Sage, and, after lending him godlike strength, used his body to strike the two victims dead a second time. Now, like many have already, you may be wondering how this is becoming of a god that preaches pacifism - and even takes away the gifts of her powers from those who fail to follow this philosophy. However, maybe this is a symbol of a change in the outlook of the healer god. Who are we to ask such questions when the Guild leader of the healers himself is a known murderer. After the sage's rampage, Dyskilian and Ugnia appealed to their own gods for intervention. However, after much praying and offerings, aide came from an unexpected quarter. The berzerker god, Zarquon, placed a bloodlust upon the Healer Guild Leader, and his murderous qualities were suddenly evident to all. What happened to Xarus, Javen and Arioch? Why did Zarquon have to come to the rescue of their followers? Perhaps Chalana has taken these other gods hostage in a ploy to become the head god of The Shattered World. This may explain the deterioration of the powers of Xarus and Javen that have occured recently (see The Exit of Xarus, Sanom City Times # 267). These events comprised the first battle in what some have come to call the God Rift Wars. However, since those dark days when healers attacked, no blows have been exchanged between the two parties. There have been words yelled accross the plains, but no more lightning, no knives in backs, no heads seperated from bodies. What will become of the pacifist healers, now that their god has joined the guild of zarquon? Will the gods Xarus, Javen and Arioch ever be seen again? We will have to wait and see. Article #37 The Exit of Xarus

Author: Ugnia

Followers of the mage god Xarus have begun to wonder what has happened to him. He seems to be abandoning his followers, bit by bit. The first sign of the exit of Xarus was the weakening of his pixies and golems. Until recently followers of Javen and Xarus enjoyed siphoning from pixies and golems. However, it seems that Xarus' strength must be waning as this is no longer the case. The next sign came during the begining of the God Rift Wars. Dyskilian and Ugnia, while battleing with Tigo and the god Chalana Arroy, had to rely on Zarquon, god of neither Dyskilian nor Ugnia, to join in the battle. Where was Xarus you may very well ask? Noone seems to know. And the third and final (up until now) sign that Xarus is leaving was the loss of the knowledge of the spell to summon golems into the world. Mages were seen wondering the city and wilderness chanting what, up until that point, had summoned forth a golem to do their bidding. However, their intense chanting was met with silence. It seems that other gods have begun to follow in Xarus' footsteps. The knowledge of the power of consume has been lost to the worshipers of Javen. There have been rumours of a new god entering the realm as well - maybe to replace the old, departing gods. Only days ago, residents were terrified at the first sighting of the god Malecta. Lightning danced across the sky, announcing her arrival into the world. Will the gods all begin to leave us? Have we done something to offend the gods? Will they ever come back? Will knew gods come and take over the ruling of the world? The answers to these questions will only be answered by time. Ugnia of clan Ugworth Editor in Chief

Article #38 Mortal taunts God... and lives.

Author: Nematode

On the 5th day of Octander of the year 450, I was witness to an epic act of defiance. Germkel, a berserker, dared to contradict God Garuda's statement that "Rocs are the world, Germkel." Despite Garuda reaffirming his statement, Germkel remained defiant, raising the God of Flight's ire. Things may have turned grim for the mortal involved had Zarquon not come to the defence of his faithful, shouting across the lands "Who are you to speak tweety? Come here and let me show you my axe." Insults and threats were passed between the two gods for a time until nothing further was heard from Zarquon. Despite the apparent absence of his god's protection, Germkel continued to taunt Garuda, prompting a display of power from Garuda. The skies darkened as thousands of rocs converged, and a shrill filled the air like this reporter has never heard. Germkel, in his incredible bravery, or incredible lack of sanity, still took the last word on the matter making the defiant shout: "Oh, WOW! Screeching (sic) fowl! Brilliant! *snicker*" Why did Garuda allow such impudence from a mortal? Did Zarquon, the berserker god, actually back down from Garuda's threats leaving his faithful to fend for himself, or was it the god's intervention that saved Germkel after all? One thing is for sure: followers of Garuda must be questioning their god's lack of wrath following this insult. Whether tensions between the two guilds are set to rise is yet to be seen.

Article #39 Choosing a guild: Which one is the best for you?

Author: Malfoy

If you have had trouble selecting a guild, read this guide by moi, Malfoy, evillist of evil, whose goal is to make it to king and bring the world into chaos. First I will begin with the pros and cons of thieves. Cons: You get a hardly useful skill at the start: sneak, and have to train it to a certain level to be able to gain more skills. If you get caught in sanom city the city guards may be after your blood. You have to present a valuable item to join. Pros: If you are an arachean, like me, you can trap someone in your web while you rob their pockets and get away as quickly as you can. Easy money. You can use your skills of stealth to sneak past dangerous creatures. Note: There are several more pros and cons that I haven't thought of/discovered. Now for the pros and cons of soulstealers. Cons: When you possess something, it slowly loses life force and eventually dies. If you attack a city guard with a possessed creature, it will know it was you and hunt you down. It takes sp to possess something. When you possess something your body will be left behind, vunerable to attacks, and unable to fight back. Pros: You can possess someone like Johanna and use her to heal you, and you can possess powerful monsters to destroy enemies. You can something you possess to go out and do things for you, and no-one will know it's you. Note: read note above. Look out for Choosing a Guild: Which one is best for you? Part 2. Coming soon.

Article #40 The life of a Demon Summoner Druid Soulstealer Necromancer.

Author: Croy

I was born in the 2nd day of Jonevar of the year 403. I was the youngest in the family of 5 other siblings. Life was tough, because there were many mouths to feed. Luckily my mother sent me to Sanom City as a child to be an Apprentice Mage of Xarus. The training of an apprentice mage was tough, and the wages initially were meager. But eventually I gained enough experience as a mage and was curious about the world. Especially the world outside Sanom City. But each time I venture outside the city walls, I would be ambushed by nasty creatures like orcs, trolls or kobolds. After dying a few times exploring outside the city gates, I thought to myself, there must be a way to explore outside the unknown world without my self actually doing the exploring. So I went back to the main library and did a lot of research on this topic. I found that allied to the mage guild were two other guilds, Javen the guild of soulstealers and also the demon summoners, arioch. So without any hesitation I joined both Javen and Arioch. The Joining of the Javen guild was relatively easy. But the joining of Arioch was rather difficult. The Arioch guild was hidden in a deep and dark maze in Morgar's Tower. The castle it self according to the scriptures I read was only a miles south of Sanom City but the maze inside the castle was very difficult to resolve. I tried leaving coins to mark the rooms but, someone was there earlier and have left coins in some of the rooms. This further complicated the issue. But I finally manage to overcome the maze manage to join Arioch. Since then, I have been working very hard to raise my skills in all 3 of the guilds. Arioch is the most difficult to raise, because summoning demons requires the blood of various beasts and also various seals. As a young demon summoner, I didn't know where to gather the blood nor the seals. I had to rely on other demon summoners like the Arioch guild master Galpec and shops to obtain seals. But after a lot of hard work, I have finally raised my levels with Arioch and done enough mining to make my own seals. After advancing in all 3 guilds, I started exploring a lot more and wanted to do some quests. The Arioch, Xarus and Javen guild combination was an awesome combination. They blend well with each other and questing was easier with the exploring power of demons and the additional spells of Xarus and the regenning power of Javen. But every few years, the guilds have to forge their new alliances. Due to some mishap, rumoured to be due to the evil plotting of the foul queen Nura, the Xarus alliance with Javen and Arioch was severed. Many adventurers were affected, including myself. But there wasn't much we could do. However, we did manage to gain Gaia and Necromancer. Both are useful and hence, that is how I managed to join all four of the guilds. I can but hope that next moonphase xarus will be returned to the fold, and the trio of arioch, javen and xarus will be reunited.

Article #41 To be or not to be: The Mage Guild

Author: Schlep

The mage guild was one one of the most powerful guilds in the shattered world. However, the guild seems to have fallen on bad times. With the former king resigning as guild leader, and having lost all of the guilds alliances, things are not looking good. The guild has always had the drawback of people using the spell point regeneration to improve racial powers and then leaving. With all that is happening, it would not surprise me to see the guild lose its spell point regeneration, if not going bankrupt for good. I have heard there is intrest from one in the guild to take over as guild leader. I just hope this is not too little too late. The changes that have taken place have already been a big shock to some. Losing the guild all together would be an even bigger one.
